In August 2026, Africa is making significant strides toward building a green hydrogen economy, showcasing major projects and funding initiatives, especially in Namibia and South Africa. Namibia’s CMB.TECH facility in Walvis Bay stands out as the continent’s first fully integrated green hydrogen hub, combining solar power, hydrogen production, and energy storage to create a sustainable industrial ecosystem. Meanwhile, South Africa has launched the SA-H2 Fund, a R3 billion ($182 million) green hydrogen fund spearheaded by the Public Investment Corporation and Climate Fund Managers to accelerate large-scale green hydrogen infrastructure projects. Despite these advances, Africa’s green hydrogen sector has yet to realize its first gigawatt-scale project investment decision. The Coega Green Ammonia project near Nelson Mandela Bay is the most advanced, aiming for an investment decision in 2027 and commercial operation by 2030.
